DIY Mini Light Garland

We all know that these days we are trying to do more DIY projects. They help to save money but also they can help you to completely customize the wedding or party to the theme with recycled mini lights and inexpensive cups or cupcake papers. Now who can say no to that? One way to add fun and festive customization is to make covers for your mini lights to string around the room or venue. You can do this in several different ways using several different products. Some people use cupcake pan liners, clear plastic party cups covered with fabric or covering Dixie cups with scrapbook paper that matches your party décor.

Let’s begin with the fun and super easy Dixie cup light garland. The supplies you’ll need for this project is strings of mini Christmas lights (color of your choice), Dixie cups, scrapbook paper that matches décor, scissors, pencil, exacto knife and double sided tape. (Using the same concept you could switch Dixie cups for clear or colored plastic party cups.)

Step 1: Carefully cut down a Dixie cup and lay it out as smooth as possible. Trace around the cup onto a sheet of paper to make a template for your scrapbook paper. Sometime making this template can be frustrating and won’t always fit the first time you try. Just keep going for it until it comes out just right. After it comes out right, use it to cut out your shades for the amount of cups that you will need to cover each bulb on your fairy light strings.

Step 2: Use your double sided tape to hold one end of your shade to the Dixie cup. Add another piece of tape to the inside of the other end of the shade. Wrap around the cup. Try to push the cut out against the lip of the Dixie cup so give it a seamless look. Make sure the edges match and repeat on the rest of your cups.

Step 3: Using your pencil, draw a small X on the bottom of all your cups. Then use your exacto knife to cut out the X on the bottom of the Dixie cups. You will need to make sure that the X is small enough that the cup won’t slide or fall off when you hang them. Begin popping your mini light bulbs into the bottom of the cups until your garland is complete with shades.

Another fun way to make mini light string garland is using cupcake pan liners to make flowers to cover the lights. This is fun for birthdays, garden parties, outdoor weddings and so many other events! Just think of the endless possibilities in pattern and color combinations. The supplies you will need for this fun project are cupcake paper is your chosen pattern or colors in both large and small sizes, mini light strings, scissors and an exacto knife.

Step 1: If you want to make flowers here is the easiest way to cut the petals and leaves out. For the leaves, fold a small cupcake paper in half twice, folded point at the bottom, cut a leaf shape out of the top. For an 8 petal flower, fold a small cupcake paper in half 3 times and cut around the top. For a 16 petal flower, fold a large cupcake paper in half 4 times and cut around the top.

Step 2: Cut a small X in the bottom of all your papers with your exacto knife. These will be layered so try to get the X’s in the same area.

Step 3: Layer papers onto each mini light or LED light bulb beginning with leaf papers first. You can layer as few or as many papers as you’d like onto each bulb. There is no right or wrong way to do this.

Now all you have left to do is string up your light garland for you special event! Easy, inexpensive and stunning décor for all occasions. People will also think you spent a great deal of time and money on the lighted decorations. Only you will know how easy it really was. Have fun and be creative!
